Puzzle Time is an ongoing series of one-of-a-kind wooden jigsaw puzzles hand-cut by Morgan Blair (me!) at my studio in Ridgewood, Queens. I started Puzzle Time in 2016 hoping to expand upon a tradition passed on to me by two master puzzle-cutters I hold in high regard: my grandfather, Mac Henry, and my uncle, Stephen Henry.
As a kid, countless hours spent putting together my grandfather’s hundreds of hand-cut puzzles informed my relationship to pattern, color and shape. Years later, my uncle lent his expert technical guidance when I was curious to explore the other side of this family craft through the lens of my painting and studio practice.
Today, Puzzle Time encompasses collaborative limited-edition puzzles featuring the work of contemporary artists, interspersed with one-off puzzles depicting profoundly unserious imagery torn from magazines, thrifted books, and other found media.
